Amazon Handmade candle compliance

Selling candles on Amazon Handmade means meeting two separate things at once: the same federal candle-labeling law every U.S. maker follows, and Amazon operational rules layered on top, including a separate barcode label if you use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). Mixing the two up is what gets listings blocked.

Amazon expects legal compliance, not a separate label format

Like other marketplaces, Amazon requires that the products you sell comply with applicable law and may ask for compliance or safety documentation. There is no Amazon-specific candle warning format. The governing requirements come from a voluntary safety standard and federal packaging law.

1. The ASTM F2058 fire-safety warning

Your candle needs the cautionary statement from ASTM F2058: the safety-alert symbol, the signal word WARNING, and the precautionary statements (burn within sight; keep away from things that catch fire; keep away from children and pets), plus burn guidance. See the exact wording →

2. FPLA net weight and maker identity

The Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (16 CFR Part 500) requires the net weight of wax in dual units in the bottom 30% of the principal display panel, for example Net Wt 8 oz (227 g), plus a name-and-place-of-business line. How to format it →

3. A California Prop 65 warning when required

Because Amazon ships nationwide, a candle that can expose a California buyer to a listed chemical may need the Prop 65 short-form warning, and Amazon surfaces Prop 65 warnings as a listing field. When the short form applies →

The Amazon-specific part: the FBA barcode is not your compliance label

If you use FBA, Amazon assigns each unit an FNSKU barcode that goes on the outside of the unit for warehouse tracking. That barcode is purely logistical. It does not satisfy any labeling law, so your ASTM warning, net weight, and business identity must still appear on the product or its packaging. Candles can also be reviewed as dangerous goods in FBA because wax and wicks are flammable, which may require a safety data sheet or an exemption sheet before they can be stored. Confirm the current dangerous-goods steps in Seller Central, as platform processes change.

A label-ready example

⚠ WARNING To prevent fire and serious injury: • Burn within sight. Never leave a burning candle unattended. • Keep away from things that catch fire. • Keep away from children and pets. Net Wt 8 oz (227 g) [Your Business Name], [City, State ZIP]

Sources: ASTM F2058 (candle fire safety); FPLA, 16 CFR Part 500 (net weight and identity); 27 CCR (California Prop 65), where applicable. The Amazon FBA barcode and dangerous-goods handling are platform operational requirements, not labeling law.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon require warning labels on candles?

Amazon requires that the candles you sell comply with applicable law, which in the US means the ASTM F2058 fire-safety warning, the FPLA net-weight and identity statements, and a California Prop 65 warning when it applies. There is no separate Amazon warning format.

Is the FBA barcode the same as my candle warning label?

No. The FNSKU barcode Amazon assigns for Fulfillment by Amazon is a logistics label for warehouse tracking. It does not satisfy any labeling law, so your ASTM warning, net weight, and business identity must still appear on the product or packaging.

Are candles considered dangerous goods on Amazon FBA?

Candles can be reviewed as dangerous goods in FBA because wax and wicks are flammable. Amazon may request a safety data sheet or an exemption sheet before storing them. Check the current dangerous-goods process in Seller Central, as platform steps change.

Do handmade candles get a labeling exemption on Amazon Handmade?

No. Federal labeling law and the ASTM F2058 standard apply regardless of batch size or the Handmade category. Selling on Amazon Handmade does not remove those obligations.
