Soy candle warning label requirements

A soy candle is just a candle made with soy wax. The wax you choose does not change what the label must say: a soy candle needs the same ASTM F2058 fire-safety warning and the same FPLA net-weight and identity statements as a paraffin, coconut, or beeswax candle.

Soy is a wax, not a labeling exemption

Marketing terms like "natural," "clean," "eco," or "non-toxic" are about the wax and fragrance, not about fire safety. An open flame behaves the same regardless of the wax, so the fire-safety warning requirement is identical. In fact, unsupported "non-toxic" or health claims can create their own advertising-law problems, so it is safer to describe the wax accurately and keep the required safety warning.

The ASTM F2058 warning still applies

Your soy candle needs the safety-alert symbol, the signal word WARNING, and the standard precautionary statements: burn within sight, keep away from things that catch fire, and keep away from children and pets — plus practical burn guidance. See the full ASTM F2058 warning →

Net weight and maker identity (FPLA)

Declare the weight of the wax (not the vessel) in dual units in the bottom 30% of the principal display panel, for example Net Wt 9 oz (255 g), and include your business name and place of business. More on container candle labels →

A label-ready example

Frequently asked questions

Do soy candles need a warning label?

Yes. Soy candles need the same ASTM F2058 fire-safety warning as any other candle, plus the FPLA net-weight and maker-identity statements. The wax type does not change the requirement.

Is the warning for a soy candle different from a paraffin candle?

No. The ASTM F2058 cautionary statement is the same regardless of wax. An open flame poses the same fire and burn hazards whether the wax is soy, paraffin, coconut, or beeswax.

Does calling a candle natural or non-toxic remove the warning requirement?

No. Those are marketing terms about the wax and fragrance, not the flame. The fire-safety warning is still required, and unsupported non-toxic claims can create separate advertising-law issues.

What net weight do I put on a soy candle?

Declare the weight of the wax only, not the jar, in both US customary and metric units in the bottom 30% of the front panel, for example Net Wt 9 oz (255 g).
